The closing bonspiel for 2009 ran without a glitch on Good Friday April 10th this year. Everyone who signed up to curl showed up to curl so that was great! Once again we had a great cross-section of our members present and a few non-curlers joined us as well. The trophy was won by a group of our junior curlers including Danny Dow, Scott Dow, Victoria Kyle and Olivia Beirnes. The other draw winners were John McIntosh, Kathy McIntosh, Marg MacKay and Mel MacKay. A huge thank you to Diane Partridge and Joyce Chamberlain for all their help with the food for the day - the chili was enjoyed by all. Vegetarian chili was also available thanks to Marg Diffin and Joyce Chamberlain. Mary Aitchison spent the day in the kitchen - I could not have had a better helper so many thanks to Mary. A total of $1457.42 was raised for the Lung Association in Bill’s Memory. Individual donations of $150, Raffle proceeds of $265, Aitchison Bonpiel contribution of $87.50 and $150 from “passing the hat” contributed to our success. My thanks go to all who gave donations and donations to the Raffle table to help the cause. I was surprised and very pleased to receive a lovely crystal clock engraved with appreciation from the club for 25 years of hosting this bonspiel- many thanks. To everyone who participated and helped in anyway to make the day a success I extend my gratitude. Have a great summer. See you next season for our special 175th year.
L to R: are Chris Taylor who was hostess and sponsor, Ron Weaver, Katy Winter, and Marje Gray
Our closing bonspiel was held on Good Friday April 6 this year. Palm trees, grass skirts, leis and even surfboards found their way into the club to create our Hawaiian theme. On the ice the “Pineapple” Free Guard Zone added to the theme flavour. Joyce Chamberlain and Diane Partridge came up with the idea of specialty drinks and donated the mix for strawberry daiquiris and pina colodas which were available at the bar.
The champions this year were Neil Lindsey, Shannon Smeltzer, Paul Margetiak and Sharon Clutton. The other draw was won by Ron Weaver, Marlene Matthews, Walter Dicks and Dale Beirnes. Once again our attendance represented a great cross-section of the club membership- including a number of our Curling 101 graduates.
Thanks to the generosity of the curlers in attendance I will be forwarding a donation of $1402.88 to the Lung Association in Bill’s memory.
The raffle raised $322, so thanks to the people who donated items for this effort. Another $95 came from donations and $80 came from the raffle at the Aitchison this year- thanks Mary. Food expenses were reduced because the FCC paid for the chicken and the salad- a big thank you to the club for that. Katy Winter donated the dinner rolls and desserts were supplied by Mary Aitchison, Lorrie Taylor and Gloria Laythorpe. Thanks to Mary Clarke and Doreen Howatt for between game snacks. To all those who helped with the kitchen, the bar, the ice etc my sincere appreciation.
Have a great summer everyone- see you in October.
The "Wild, Wild West"came to life at the closing Bonspiel held on Good Friday April 14th this year. Decorations were superb thanks to Brad and Lorrie Taylor. They designed cacti, boots, and a wagon to create a great western atmosphere (and portable to boot- pardon the pun). The curlers got closer to the boot decorations when they became part of the free guard strategy in the second game- actually many got too close! Thanks to Brad for a great idea to add a little fun to the games. Judy Gale provided her creative touch in the washroom by turning it into a Jail Cell- hope the resident didn't prove too much bother to people needing to use the facilities. Thanks Judy for a great job- you really have a way with that "wee" room!! The champions this year were Ed Weaver, Alberta Lee, Kayla Cozzarin and Sharon Cozzarin. Close behind and winning the other draw were Neil Lindsey, Wanda Turner, Marg Plue and Lynda Waterhouse. Once again our attendance represented a great cross-section of the club membership- and also saw some guests new to the game who will hopefully join the curling ranks of the future. Thanks to the generosity of the curlers in attendance I will be forwarding a donation of $1409.05 to the Lung Association in Bill's memory. The raffle raised $301, so thanks to the people who donated items for this effort. Another $83 came from the raffle at the Aitchison this year- thanks Mary. Expenses this year were minimal because Tracey (Taylor) MacFarlane donated the spaghetti, meatballs and sauce and Katy Winter provided the garlic bread. Desserts were supplied by Mary Aitchison, Mary Clarke, Jeanne Alexander, Gloria Laythorpe and Chris Taylor. To all those who helped with the kitchen, the bar, the ice etc my sincere appreciation. A special thanks to Katy- she could not see us throw out the leftover spaghetti and meatballs so she packed them all up into foil trays and "rode off into the sunset" to take all this food to the Guelph Drop In Centre where it was gratefully received. Way to go Katy- our world needs more people like you! Have a great summer everyone- see you in October.

The yearend bonspiel on Friday night (and Saturday morning) April 8th was a huge success -- everyone sure seemed to be having a lot of fun. Thanks to all the people who helped create a great atmosphere by donning their "best Hillbilly attire" and looking so good. The draw went off with a minimum of glitches this year because those who signed up arrived at the time indicated -- well done.
Congratulations to this year's winner Ed Weaver and his team. Deb Schlieker and her team won the other draw. Players from all club leagues, seniors, juniors, Friday nights, ladies and men were present. It was great to see this kind of representation in attendance at the closing event. And they were generous! The Lung Association will receive a donation $1260 thanks to y'all!
As always I owe thanks to many people! Diane P, Mary A, Maggie D, Joyce C, Louise N (Bill's sister), Mary C all helped prepare the excellent meal y'all enjoyed so much. To everyone who gave a hand decorating (Judy's artistic flair shows well in the outhouse), getting food out and cleaning up after, tending bar, preparing ice, etc. I extend my sincere appreciation. A huge thank you for the many wonderful donations that came in to support the cause.
See y'all again next year.
